Returning for its fourth consecutive year, Squared has announced its lineup for the 2014 installment of the Franklinton Arts District’s annual Urban Scrawl festival, to be held Saturday, August 23 and Sunday, August 24. Lower Frequency’s Saturday evening set and DJ Push’s Sunday evening set will include a house dance performance from the Jump Crew. A first for Urban Scrawl, Squared’s 2014 lineup will feature beatboxing by Youngstown transplant LethalFX, who has shared a stage with the likes of Rusko, Snoop Dogg and Rahzel. The Saturday lineup includes performances by veteran FBK playing a special birthday set and Night Mode, the curators of Columbus’s up and coming quarterly dance party of same name, leading into a closing set by Cosmictraveler on Saturday. Squared returns to Victory’s for another installment of our monthly dance party. Join special guest, Kruser from Milwaukee, along with Squared DJ, Jason Allen for the cheapest night of funky music in town.
With the change of the millennium, came a change in musical tastes that would ensue a lifetime for one man. The art of just experiencing music would no longer be just that. It would now be transformed into capturing, manipulating, and creating, eventually becoming a way of life. From that day forth Kruser would ultimately devote his life to underground electronic music, a change that wouldn’t be obvious to even himself for many years. A man of “many hats” Kruser cannot be pigeon holed into any one category, or genre of music, truly having an endless spectrum in musical tastes.
Having come from a small, closed minded community he felt the need to be different, or against the grain. With his heart on his sleeve, Kruser worked at bringing a new sound to an old town. But it wasn’t until he ventured to Milwaukee were his motivation, determination, and musical achievements would truly start to bloom. With over a decade of promotions under his belt booking talent from across the globe, countless mix tapes, original productions, and sharing the stage with some of the biggest names in the game, Kruser has found his true passion. 2014 will be the biggest year for him, and the smallest in the scope of the future …
This very special, late-night event features Detroit’s Luke Hess and New York’s Oshana along with local hero, Plural and Squared resident, Mike Amerine (aka Lower Frequency) at one of Columbus’ most unique spaces.
Luke Hess is the new star out of Detroit. He has celebrated EPs out on Omar S’ FXHE, Carl Craig’s Planet-e, Echocord, Echocord Colour, Ornaments, Kontra-Musik, Beretta Grey and Modelisme. His new Detroit label DeepLabs is the center for his own deeply personal projects.
In an era where ‘original’ music is few and far between, few artists have been able to capture a truly indigenous sound. Luckily, for US-born Producer and DJ, Oshana, a relentless pursuit of instinctive rhythm has allowed her to produce a sound that is undeniably her own. Oshana has composed a style that is both unique and complex, a product of expansive atmosphere, embryonic bass, and infectious percussion and rhythm.
Plural’s influences range from early Punk and Hardcore, to modern Industrial and Techno. His sound is often described as dark, soulful, and funky.
Lower Frequency is the brain child of Mike Amerine and serves as both an ethos and an alias. Lower Frequency alludes to the music Michael plays: deep and dark yet cerebral, underground, and very bass line driven.
