Urban Scrawl 12

Urban Scrawl is a 2-day arts festival organized by the Franklinton Arts District featuring the live creation of murals by talented artists from central Ohio and beyond. Since 2007, Urban Scrawl has provided Columbus artists a way to showcase their talent while participating in Central Ohio’s largest ongoing urban renewal project. Each year the number of participants, murals, sponsors, and attendees grows making this a landmark summer event in Columbus, Ohio.

These completed murals are now being made available for purchase annually at the Art for Franklinton fundraiser auction to benefit Franklinton Arts District’s new George Bellows Artist Grants program. Ardalan’s Thunder Tour

Mister Shifter joins Tony DeSaro, Drew Whiteted, Matt Freeman, Oh Shell, Sacha Robotti, and Ardalan.

Range, appeal and a massive dose of nasty, gritty bass are the three chief weapons every Dirtybird artist has in his quiver, but Ardalan seems to be the peak culmination of all those assets in one wieldy point. This young archer has had the incomprehensible luck to fall into crew with his idols, be reared by their best and given some of their most guarded musical secrets, then hoisted to a platform to blare his prodigious beats from places where most creators can only dream of being.

Born in Tehran, Iran, Ardalan Noghre-Kar possesses a peculiar, fresh perspective on music genesis without even trying. His mixes, remixes and dubs are known for their sass, energy and wickedly wry samples that snap like a wet towel to the face, but his original tracks are where his efforts shine, like those released with Justin Martin-“Mr. Spock,” a 2010 party anthem charted by Diplo and Jesse Rose, and “Lezgo,” charted by Dog Blood (Skrillex and Boyz Noise)-and those soon-to-be-released on his own EP with Dirtybird. It’s no wonder he’s been given the nod by everyone from Papa Dirtybird himself (Claude Von Stroke) and A-Trak to those who are charting his remixes, like Maya Jane Coles, Audiojack, and Riva Starr, the last of whom he has an upcoming remix for to be released on Snatch.

The greatest strength in Ardy’s music is his ability to whip out hits that work equally well from the dankest basements to the most opulent dancefloors; sounds that satisfy those with diverse tastes who can unite under his single agenda of having a good time.

Restart Drum & Bass

Restart Drum & Bass brings you a very rare performance in February by Lights Out! With an opening DJ set by A Boy and His Dog.

Hovelled in a non-descript storefront in the outer reaches of Clintonville, a man covered in ink wearing a rugged, wooly beard smirks. His shop is roughly the size of a spacious closet—leather goods and motorcycle memorabilia ornament the walls with workmanship. By day, Ryan Moya, owner, crafter, and entrepreneur, runs a leather-working business. By night, Ryan’s musical side comes to life. His rugged, tumbledown tunes can be heard from all corners of Columbus if you know where to find him. He has a degree from Berklee College of Music, shreds in local band The Black Antler, and DJs as Lights Out .

Cutting his teeth in the Chicago, Boston, and Oakland’s drum & bass scenes, Moya has shared the stage with dozens of heavy hitters from around the globe. As a resident at Boston’s Fragment and Exchange nightclubs in the late 90’s, performing under the monikers Catalyst and Executive Contour, he played alongside and collaborated with some of the biggest names in drum & bass. Later performing as Autopilot in Oakland, he began branching out to all facets of the genre, playing very eclectic sets. He also was the co-host of radio show, Projekt3, which featured drum & bass talent from around the world. Moya, now Columbus-based, performs as Lights Out, bringing even deeper energy to his sets.

Since his first Columbus appearance in 2012, Lights Out has been added to the already heavy-hitting Squared roster, bringing consistent energy to his sets and to the dance floor. Expect a healthy dose of quality drum & bass, not limited to one particular genre or era, but one that will keep you movin’ throughout the night.
